Single malts from the highlands take on many shapes and forms. Because the region is so vast, it isn't easy to make sweeping statements, and the whiskies are further divided into four subregions.
- North - full bodied rich and sweet,
- South - slightly lighter, drier, and distinctly fruity,
- West - full and pungent with a notable tone of peat and smoke,
- East - vary from dry to sweetish, and from herbal to very fruity,
