The history of distillation on the Isle of Arran is long and rich. Once home distilling became illegal, the islanders went underground and kept supplying the rising demand for the water of life. The Arran distillery opened in 1995 and is the first legal one since its predecessor, located in Lagg, closed its doors in 1837. Unlike many distilleries on the West Coast and the islands, Arran's whisky does not use peat. Their malt is soft and smooth, with citrus and cereal notes.
