Teaninich 2010 Cask #721403

ABV: 57.2% 70 cL

Located in the northeast Highlands, Teaninich was founded in 1817. With the whisky produced there primarily destined for use in some of Scotland's most popular blends. Teaninich is notable for being one of the few distilleries to use a mash filter instead of the traditional mass tun, a method more commonly associated with brewing.

This single cask has been aged for 14 years in a Hogshead and finished in Margaux cask, producing notes of stewed bramble fruits, vanilla and milk chocolate. A fruity and sweet whisky that has been bottled at natural cask strength of 57.2% ABV, without artificial colouring or chill filtration. Only 227 bottles have been produced.

Nose

The Margaux cask is immediately apparent, as the nose greets you with stewed bramble fruits, a swirl of vanilla ice cream drizzled with raspberry coulis, and a dusting of milk chocolate shavings. Beneath, a delicate thread or caramelised sugar and polished oak adds depth.

Palate

On tasting, this dram is impressively babbled, bringing forward such red berries complemented by a smooth, creamy sweetness. A splash of water brightens it up, revealing fresh notes of crisp apples and pears.

Finish

Long and pleasing finish, as the red fruit notes gradually ease away, leaving a gentle hint of chocolate and a lightly tannic warmth.

Teaninich Distillery, founded in 1817 near Alness in the Northern Highlands, is known for producing a bright, grassy, and slightly oily spirit that’s prized by blenders. Instead of a traditional mash tun, it uses a mash filter, which helps create its clean, crisp profile. Long fermentations and classic pot stills shape a whisky full of green apple, citrus, fresh herbs, and gentle malt sweetness, usually matured in refill bourbon casks to keep those flavours clear and vivid. Although most of its output goes into blends, the occasional single malt bottlings reveal a distinctive, lively Highland character.
