Old Pulteney Distillery, founded in 1826 in the coastal town of Wick in Caithness, is one of Scotland’s most northerly mainland distilleries and is famously known as “The Maritime Malt” for its strong connection to the North Sea. Historically accessible only by sea, the distillery grew alongside Wick’s herring industry, with whisky and supplies transported by boat. Its spirit is shaped by distinctive stills with large boil balls, traditional worm tub condensers, and maturation in a cool, salty coastal climate, which together contribute to a character that is lightly briny, sweet, malty, and gently fruity. Now owned by Inver House Distillers, Old Pulteney is celebrated for producing elegant single malts that balance maritime freshness with honeyed richness and subtle spice.
