Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014

ABV: 50% 70 cL

Distilled using only Islay-grown barley, Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 embodies everything an Islay whisky can and should be.

With a quiet complexity, Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 showcases the delicate balance of fruit and smoke.

Bottled without chill-filtration or artificial colouring.

Nose

Malty digestive biscuits and peat embers open on the nose, followed by sweet vanilla and notes of honey, toffee and Crème Brûlée. As the whisky breathes its fruity character comes to the fore, with lemon rind and peat smoke rising from the glass, moving to grapefruit, ripe melon, peach and crisp red apple. Maritime note is offset with a touch of wood spice, nutmed and cinnamon, showcasing the depth and complexity of this single malt.

Palate

An intial citrys tang is followed by sweet ripe fruit, and gentle peat smoke. A subtle marine character cpmes through, with this sandy minerality complemented with toasted oak. On a second sip, the balance of fruit and smoke is unmistaken, with a medley of apricot, peach and ripe melon, delicatelu wrapped in charred heather and peat embers. The maturation in American bourbon barrels brinds lightly toasted oak notes, with a hint of coconut, creamy marzipan and tobacco.

Finish

Soft stoned fruit and toasted oak sweetness leave a beautifully banalced finish, while a subtle fry barbeque smoke lingers.

The Bruichladdich name comes from the Scottish Gaelic 'Bruthach a' Chladaich', which means brae by the shore. The distillery was founded in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers. The distillery changed hands many times until 1994 when it was shut down as 'surplus to requirements’. It remained mothballed until December 2000, when it was purchased by private investors. It took nearly six months to resume the distillation, as Bruichladdich had never seen any modernisation efforts from the previous owners. In 2012, it was taken over by Remy Cointreau. Today, Bruichladdich produces three different styles of whisky: their classic unpeated under the name Bruichladdich, heavily seated port Charlotte and the world’s most peaty malt - Octomore.
