Old School Single Malt 51 Years Old Coastal Edition Batch #5

ABV: 44.0% 70 cL

This extraordinary single malt was distilled more than half a century ago at an undisclosed Scottish distillery. The bottler keeps its origins a closely guarded secret, but the Coastal Edition name hints at a home by the sea. That's the fun of a mystery malt: you judge the whisky purely on what's in the glass, and you can make your own guess as to where it came from.

This release was bottled by Signatory Vintage, the independent bottler based at Edradour Distillery near Pitlochry, as Batch #5 of their Old School Single Malt Coastal Edition. The whisky spent an incredible 51 years maturing in a single second-fill Oloroso sherry butt.

Oloroso is a rich, full-bodied sherry from Jerez in southern Spain, aged oxidatively so that it develops deep, nutty, dried-fruit character. Butts are large sherry casks of around 500 litres. As a second-fill cask, this butt had already been used once to mature whisky, so its sherry influence is gentler. Over five decades, that lets the spirit's own character shine alongside the cask.

Over such a long maturation, sherry cask and spirit have grown into one another completely. Signatory Vintage describes the result as the meeting of sea and sherry in perfect balance: rich and complex, with a subtle coastal character running throughout and a long, graceful, savoury finish.

Aged for 51 years, this single malt is presented at its natural cask strength of 44.0% ABV, with natural colour.
