Bruichladdich Distillery

Octomore 16.1

ABV: 59.3% 70 cL

This single malt from Bruichladdich Distillery in the Islay region was created using 100% Scottish Mainland Concerto Barley. It was aged for 5 years in first fill Bourbon Barrels, malted to 101.4 PPM and bottled at 59.3% ABV, this elegant liquid brings forth intense peat smoke with surprising delicacy. Salted caramel, honeyed melon and apricot lead into chocolate and coconut, accompanied by a soft wave of earthy minerality and lingering smoke.

Nose

An intriguing opening of sea spray and orchard fruits, enveloped by Octomore’s delicate peat smoke. Fine florals of dried heather and camomile emerge, followed by subtle vanilla bean and toasted almond. Cedar, smoked paprika and iodine add complex savoury notes.

Palate

Immediate, yet gentle, peat smoke followed by salted caramel, honeyed melon and apricot. Sweet malt sugars intermingle with cinnamon and star anise. Sea salt, toffee, chocolate and coconut follow, accompanied by a soft wave of earthy minerality and lingering smoke.

Finish

The finish is long and lingering, with the signature peat smoke taking centre stage. Black pepper and toffee intertwine with sea salt, creating a complex and satisfying conclusion.

The Bruichladdich name comes from the Scottish Gaelic 'Bruthach a' Chladaich', which means brae by the shore. The distillery was founded in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers. The distillery changed hands many times until 1994 when it was shut down as 'surplus to requirements’. It remained mothballed until December 2000, when it was purchased by private investors. It took nearly six months to resume the distillation, as Bruichladdich had never seen any modernisation efforts from the previous owners. In 2012, it was taken over by Remy Cointreau. Today, Bruichladdich produces three different styles of whisky: their classic unpeated under the name Bruichladdich, heavily seated port Charlotte and the world’s most peaty malt - Octomore.
