Little Brown Dog Spirits

North British 30 Years Old 1996

ABV: 47.5% 70 cL

Distilled in 1996 at North British in Edinburgh, in Scotland's Lowlands. North British produces a soft, sweet and creamy grain spirit that rewards long ageing.

This single cask spent its full maturation in a Colheita port pipe. As it was produced in Edinburgh in 1996, Little Brown Dog gave the label a Trainspotting theme: Choose Little Brown Dog.

Colheita is a single-vintage tawny port from the Douro Valley in Portugal, aged in wood for many years before bottling. Port is fortified with grape spirit, and a pipe is the traditional long, narrow port cask, much larger than a standard whisky barrel.

Little Brown Dog like their grain whisky with a bit of age, and say this one is remarkably well balanced between spirit and wood, with an extra layer of red fruit from the port. One for the single grain doubters to try.

Aged 30 years and bottled on 7 October 2026.

North British single grain whisky offers a lighter, smoother alternative to single malts, showcasing the elegant side of grain distillation. Made primarily from maize (corn) and distilled in continuous column stills, it produces a clean, sweet spirit that develops rich complexity with age. Matured in ex-bourbon or refill casks, North British single grain whiskies often display notes of vanilla, toffee, honey, coconut, and gentle spice, with a silky texture and subtle oak influence. While most of its output goes into blended Scotch, independent bottlers occasionally release aged single grain expressions — some over 30 or 40 years old — prized for their smoothness, delicate sweetness, and exceptional value compared to similarly aged single malts.
