Thompson Bros.

North British 17 Years Old

ABV: 48% 70 cL

This single grain Scotch whisky from North British Distillery located in the the Lowland region of Scotland. This grain is a sherry cask edition of the ‘An Edinburgh Dram’. Matured from birth in excellent quality sherry casks, this 17-year-old North British is our homage to Jerez de la Frontera. And, of course, Edinburgh.

Bottled by Thompson Bros. at natural colour and no chill filtration.

Nose

Very reminiscent of navy rum – lots of dried fruits, molasses, golden syrup and a touch of treacle. Black olives and liquorice with high % dark chocolate.

Palate

This is whisky on paper but oscillates between Armagnac, rum and very high proof Oloroso. Stewed plums, raisin flambé, figs, Dairy Milk Fruit & Nut, cocoa powder, vanilla pods. Dusty Andalusian evenings.

Finish

Medium length, nicely rounded with plenty of spice and sweetness from the wood, and a final kiss of Seville oranges.

Whisky type Single grain

North British single grain whisky offers a lighter, smoother alternative to single malts, showcasing the elegant side of grain distillation. Made primarily from maize (corn) and distilled in continuous column stills, it produces a clean, sweet spirit that develops rich complexity with age. Matured in ex-bourbon or refill casks, North British single grain whiskies often display notes of vanilla, toffee, honey, coconut, and gentle spice, with a silky texture and subtle oak influence. While most of its output goes into blended Scotch, independent bottlers occasionally release aged single grain expressions — some over 30 or 40 years old — prized for their smoothness, delicate sweetness, and exceptional value compared to similarly aged single malts.
