Murray McDavid

Miltonduff 15 Years Old Oloroso & Px Sherry Benchmark

ABV: 53.9% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled in 2008 at the Miltonduff Distillery near Elgin, in Scotland's Speyside region. Miltonduff is known for its fruity, well-rounded Speyside spirit, a classic blenders' malt that is rarely seen as a single malt, which makes independent releases like this one particularly worth seeking out.

For this Benchmark release, Murray McDavid matured the spirit in bourbon hogsheads before transferring it to two styles of first-fill sherry casks from Jerez, Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez, where it spent its final five years. The casks were then brought together for bottling as part of Murray McDavid's Spring 2024 Benchmark collection.

Oloroso is a rich, full-bodied sherry, aged in contact with the air to develop deep, nutty and dried-fruit characteristics. Pedro Ximénez, made from sun-dried grapes, is the sweetest and most luscious of all sherries, dark and syrupy with intense raisin and fig richness. Seasoned in European oak, both are among the most prized casks in Scotch whisky maturation.

Five years in these first-fill casks gives the sherry influence plenty of time to build on Miltonduff's naturally fruity spirit, layering it with richness, sweetness and depth while the earlier bourbon maturation provides a soft foundation. Murray McDavid present this release as a celebration of the long tradition of maturing Scotch whisky in sherry casks, and the result is a rich, generous and classic sherried Speysider.

Aged for 15 years and bottled in Spring 2024, it is presented at natural cask strength of 53.9% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration. Limited to 1,625 bottles.

Miltonduff Distillery is a historic Speyside whisky distillery located near Elgin, Scotland. Founded in 1824, the site’s water source, the Black Burn, was once used by monks from nearby Pluscarden Abbey for brewing and distilling. Over the years, Miltonduff changed hands several times, including acquisition by Hiram Walker in 1936 to supply malt for blends like Ballantine’s. Today, it remains a key producer for blended Scotch while also releasing single malts.
Their whiskies are known for a fresh, floral character, with notes of orchard fruits, honey, citrus, and subtle vanilla, offering a clean, delicate, and approachable style. Older or independent bottling sometimes shows richer, sherried flavours, adding depth while maintaining the distillery’s signature freshness.
