Lochlea 6 Years Old 2020

ABV: 57.1% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled in 2020 at the Lochlea Distillery, known for its distinctive lowland malt. It was aged for 6 years in a single first-fill barrel, resulting in a light malt with notes of caramelised sugar, charred French Fancies and dry, slightly salty finish.

Bottled by Thompson Bros. at natural cask strength, without chill-filtration or artificial colouring.

Nose

Incredibly welcoming, sweet, and comforting. It opens with the warm, buttery aroma of toasted brioche, paired with a rich fruitiness of pear compote and ripe peaches. A classic confectionery sweetness follows, bringing to mind old-school boiled sweets and powdery Jelly Babies, all balanced by a dollop of vanilla custard and a light zip of green ginger wine.

Palate

The arrival introduces a bit more wood character but keeps the sweet shop theme front and centre. You get structured toasted oak alongside the caramelised sugar of charred French Fancies and a beautifully specific note of an old, dusty tin of Simpkins fruit sweets. Rich, caramelised bananas develop next, before the palate hits an intriguing crisp, slightly salty mix of grape and melon skins resting in brine.

Finish

Good length, where that surprising salinity carries all the way through to the end. It finishes slightly dry, leaving a lingering, pleasantly tannic grip of those salted fruit skins.
