Loch Lomond "Old Rhosdhu" 32 Years Old

ABV: 49.2% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled in 1994 at the Loch Lomond Distillery, known for creating multiple styles under one roof in their Highland home in Alexandria. It was matured for 30 years and re-racked into Madeira barrique for the final 2 years. The result is a unique, one-of-a-kind malt with notes of black mustard, yellow apple and tarragon.

Bottled by Thompson Bros.  at natural cask strength, without chill-filtration or artificial colouring.

Nose

Extremely complex, atmospheric, and delightfully old-school. It drops you straight into an Italian antique shop full of deep rancio and wood oil, before wandering out into a West Coast tractor shed – all machine oils, metal polishes, and rough hessian sacks. There is a heavy, tactile note of damp clay that places you squarely in the pottery scene from Ghost with Patrick Swayze. This industrial weight is balanced by a burst of sweet-tart fruit: rich berry compote, sharp cranberry juice, and chewy apple and strawberry fruit leather.

Palate

Oily, savoury, and wonderfully bizarre. The arrival is led by the sharp, dry warmth of black mustard seed and the soft, slightly oxidised sweetness of a bruised yellow apple. A splash of Rose’s lime cordial cuts through the mid-palate, before it shifts gears into a distinct, leafy green herbal territory defined by star anise and fresh tarragon.

Finish

Long, lingering, and unashamedly funky. The savoury theme continues right to the end with texturing notes of wholegrain mustard, tart unripe berries, and a final, grounding echo of wet, earthy clay.

Loch Lomond, established in 1965 near Alexandria in the southern Highlands, is one of Scotland’s most versatile and technically distinctive distilleries. It uses a mix of traditional pot stills, unusual straight-neck pot stills, and continuous stills, allowing it to create a wide range of spirit styles under one roof. This flexibility results in whiskies that can be fruity, floral, lightly smoky, or richly spiced, often showing notes of orchard fruit, malt sweetness, and gentle wood influence. Known for innovation and variety, Loch Lomond has built a reputation for characterful malts shaped by its unique still designs and broad creative range.
