Murray McDavid
ABV: 52.6% 70 cL
Lennox Peat is a Murray McDavid Mystery Malt, a heavily peated single malt distilled in 2011 at an undisclosed Highland distillery set in a Scottish vale, known for producing a wide range of whisky styles under one roof. As with every Mystery Malt, the distillery is never named, leaving drinkers to judge the whisky purely on what's in the glass, and perhaps to have a guess at where it was made.
This release forms part of Murray McDavid's Spring 2024 Mystery Malt collection. The peated spirit was first matured in bourbon hogsheads before Murray McDavid's Whisky Creations Team transferred it into small, first-fill bourbon casks from Koval, the craft distillery in Chicago. It spent five years in these casks before they were brought together for bottling.
Koval is one of America's most respected craft distilleries, and its small bourbon casks offer a greater contact between spirit and wood than a standard barrel. That extra influence from fresh American oak was chosen to soften and round out the bold peat, adding sweetness and creaminess without losing the smoky heart of the whisky.
The result is a lively, well-balanced peated malt, where bright smoke and sweet bourbon oak work in harmony. It's a great example of how Murray McDavid uses carefully chosen casks to shape and reveal a spirit's character, and a rewarding dram for peat lovers looking for something a little different.
Aged for 13 years and bottled in Spring 2024 from casks 384, 386, 384A and 386A, it is presented at natural cask strength of 52.6% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration. Limited to 516 bottles.
Tax included.
