Thompson Bros.
ABV: 52.7% 70 cL
This single malt was distilled at Jura Distillery in Craighouse on the Isle of Jura, in the Inner Hebrides, just across the Sound of Islay. Jura produces both unpeated and peated spirit with a distinctive island character, and this one carries a gentle touch of smoke.
It is released by Thompson Bros. in their "Pride of the Hebrides" series, after 21 years of maturation in first-fill barrels. The Dornoch-based independent bottler paired it with label art by Whiskyhobo, and the bottle carries a hologram label.
A barrel is a cask of around 200 litres, usually made from American oak. "First fill" means this is the first time the cask has been filled with Scotch after its previous contents were emptied, so the wood is at its most active and has plenty of sweetness, vanilla and colour to give to the spirit. Over 21 years, that active oak has had a long time to shape the spirit, adding structure while still letting the island character come through.
Thompson Bros. describe the result as bright, fresh and zippy, with a refined and surprisingly gentle peat profile, classic savoury island character and a long, coating, waxy finish.
Aged 21 years and presented at natural cask strength of 52.7% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration.
Tax included.
