Ichiro’s Malt Chichibu The Peated 2026 is the first release of heavily peated single malt at 50 phenolic parts per million (PPM) since 2022. It is a combination of around 40 casks, mostly ex-bourbon barrels with a portion of oloroso sherry casks used along with re-coopered hogsheads. The whisky is elegant and smoky with a gentle sweetness and resinous finish. 

It opens with notes of soft peat smoke and toasted baking spices along with burnt caramel and roasted almonds. On the palate there is a sweet ginger spice along with honey, banana and cooked apple before finishing on a grassy and green smoky note.

Chichibu, founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto in Saitama Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most influential new-wave distilleries. Chichibu uses a variety of cask types, local barley experiments, and traditional floor malting, producing vibrant, youthful spirits with notes of fruit, honey, oak spice, and a touch of herbal depth. Its limited releases are highly sought after, and the distillery is often credited with helping reignite worldwide excitement for Japanese whisky.
