Harris 8 Years Old The Pride of Hebrides

ABV: 49.8% 70 cL

1This single malt was distilled at the Isle of Harris Distillery in Tarbert, on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Harris makes a gently peated spirit with a fresh, coastal character that reflects its island home.

It is released by Thompson Bros. in their "Pride of the Hebrides" series, having been matured for 8 years in first fill bourbon barrels. The Dornoch-based independent bottler paired it with label art by Whiskyhobo.

First fill bourbon barrels are American oak casks of around 200 litres that have held bourbon once before being filled with Scotch for the first time. American oak is rich in vanillins, and at first fill the wood still has plenty of sweetness and softness to give, which suits a lighter, coastal spirit like this.

Thompson Bros. describe the result as fresh and coastal, delicate and light-footed, with a gentle waft of peat smoke and soft, malt-led sweetness from the barrels.

Aged 8 years and presented at natural cask strength of 49.8% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration.

1 BOTTLE PER HOUSEHOLD

Nose

Fresh coastal air, sea brine, and a gentle waft of light peat smoke. Zesty lime leaf and pale caramel sit atop a bowl of shredded wheat, leading into almond oil as it opens up.

Palate

Delicate and light-footed with more coastal influence and soft vanilla. A sugary, malt-forward sweetness follows, with fresh orange blossom and fragrant chamomile elbowing their way through the mid-palate.

Finish

Starts floral before bringing the grain back into focus. Leaves a lingering impression of coastal machair in bloom through the mist and sea drizzle.

Harris is a community distillery that works closely with people and businesses on the Island. The idea to open a distillery in Harris was sparked to combat the declining population, create opportunities for young people, and bring tourism to the Island. The construction began in the spring of 2014, and the distillery opened its doors a year later. They became famous for their sugar kelp gin, known for its unique flavour and beautiful bottle design, while awaiting their first single malt whisky. In 2023, the long wait was over, and their first single malt was released. Named Hearach, which is a name for someone living on the Island, the whisky was a lightly peated malt with bourbon and sherry cask influences.
