Glen Spey - one of the hidden gems of Speyside started its life in 1878, when James Stuart added distillery equipment to his oatmeal mill. Without a doubt, venturing into whisky came on the back of the late Victorian whisky boom and the arrival of the railway.
For most of its history, Glen Spey’s whisky has been used primarily for blending, and it wasn’t until 2001 that it saw its first official single malt release, when Diageo included it in their Flora & Fauna Collection. Today, Glen Spey remains a key component in J&B blends. Official single malt releases are extremely rare, but the distillery’s light, nutty spirit can still be found in collections from independent bottlers. Throughout its life, liquid from the Glen Spey was mainly used for blending; it had not, in fact, seen an official single malt release until 2001, when Diageo added the malt to its Flora & Fauna Collection.
