Thompson Bros.
ABV: 52.1% 70 cL
This single malt was distilled in 2006 at Glen Garioch in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, in the eastern Highlands. Glen Garioch is known for a robust, full-bodied and fruity spirit with a spicy edge, a style that has the backbone to stand up to two decades in active wine casks.
The release comes from Thompson Bros., the independent bottling label of Dornoch Distillery in Sutherland. Two red wine barriques were brought together for this bottling, giving an outturn of just 357 bottles, and the label carries original artwork by the artist KMG.
A barrique is the classic 225-litre cask of the Bordeaux wine trade, noticeably smaller than the hogsheads and butts more common in Scotch whisky. The smaller size means a greater proportion of the spirit is in contact with the wood, so the cask works faster and more intensely. Having previously held red wine, the staves bring colour, red-fruit character and a firm, grippy tannic structure to the whisky.
Over twenty years, the weighty Glen Garioch spirit and the wine-seasoned oak have become deeply integrated, as the dark ruby-mahogany colour in the bottle suggests. The result is a rich, intense and wine-forward dram with plenty of spice and structure from the barriques.
Distilled in 2006 and bottled at 20 years old, it is presented at natural cask strength of 52.1% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration, in a 70cl bottle limited to 357 bottles.
