Murray McDavid

Glen Garioch 11 Years Old Tokaji Wine Benchmark

ABV: 46% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled in 2010 at the Glen Garioch Distillery in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, in the Highland region of Scotland, just a short drive from our shop in Aberdeen. Glen Garioch is known for its robust, malty and gently spicy Highland spirit, a full-bodied style that stands up well to adventurous cask finishes.

For this Benchmark release, Murray McDavid matured the spirit in bourbon hogsheads for over nine years before transferring it to casks that had previously held Tokaji, where it spent its final 18 months. The casks were then brought together for bottling in 2022.

Tokaji is the celebrated sweet wine of Hungary's Tokaj region, famed for centuries for its rich, honeyed sweetness and lively acidity. Its casks are rarely used in Scotch whisky maturation, which makes this an unusual and characterful finish.

The long bourbon maturation gives a soft, sweet foundation, while the Tokaji casks add a layer of sweet, fruity richness to Glen Garioch's spicy Highland character. The result is a bright and balanced dram, a lovely and unusual take on a classic Aberdeenshire malt.

Aged for 11 years and bottled in 2022 at 46% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration. Limited to 1,559 bottles.

Glen Garioch Distillery was officially founded in 1797, although there are claims it may have been active even earlier. Like many other distilleries, Glen Garioch has changed hands multiple times over the years and has endured periods of mothballing, shifts in style, and numerous renovations. Today, this Highland gem—nestled in the heart of Oldmeldrum village in Aberdeenshire—is known for producing fruity whiskies with a distinctive touch of spice.
