Fettercairn 18 Years Old 2008

ABV: 54.2% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled in 2008 at Fettercairn Distillery, in the village of Fettercairn at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains in Aberdeenshire, in the Highlands. Fettercairn is known for a fruity, malty spirit with a characteristic tropical lean.

It was matured for 18 years in a refill hogshead and bottled by Thompson Bros., the independent bottler based in Dornoch. The label art is by KMG.

Hogsheads are casks of around 250 litres, often rebuilt from American oak barrels. A refill hogshead has already held Scotch at least once before, so its influence is gentler, letting the distillery's character come through clearly even after 18 years in the wood.

Thompson Bros. describe the result as fresh, malty and delightfully fragrant on the nose, opening up to a broad, textured palate that is significantly more full-bodied than the delicate nose suggests.

Distilled in 2008, aged 18 years and presented at natural cask strength of 54.2% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration.

1 BOTTLE PER HOUSEHOLD

Nose

Fresh, malty, and delightfully fragrant. It opens with sweet grist and a greenhouse burst of potted geraniums, accompanied by an elegant touch of old-school floral perfume. The fruit profile is crisp and defined by sharp pip and stone fruits - think underripe white peaches, nectarines, and crunchy orchard apple cores.

Palate

Broad, textured, and significantly more full-bodied than the delicate nose suggests. The orchard fruits turn warm and baked, stepping right into a generous slice of pear pie served alongside a thick, comforting dollop of vanilla custard. A quiet, warming rasp of freshly grated nutmeg grounds the richness across the mid-palate.

Finish

A lively snap of ground white pepper cuts through the custardy weight, leaving a mouth-watering, clean finish that lingers on tart stewed pears, astringent quince paste, and sweet malt that keeps you reaching straight back for the glass.
