Bunnahabhain (Staoisha) 12 Years Old 2013 Infrequent Flyers

ABV: 54.4% 70 cL

This peated single malt was distilled in 2013 at Bunnahabhain Distillery on the Isle of Islay. Staoisha is the name given to Bunnahabhain's peated spirit, a smoky counterpart to the distillery's usual unpeated style. Matured for 12 years, it was finished in a barrel made from chinquapin oak, a lesser-seen species of American oak, adding sweet, spicy wood character to the coastal smoke.

Bottled at natural cask strength, without chill-filtration or artificial colouring, by Alistair Walker for his Infrequent Flyers Collection.

Nose

Unmistakably Islay - beguiling aromas of sweet iodine and Battenberg cake, with molasses and a hint of Germolene.

Palate

Enticing smoky flavours of kippers, streaky bacon and chorizo, complemented by the contrasting sweetness of Demerara sugar, marzipan and honeycomb, with a touch of cracked black pepper.

William Robertson built Bunnahabhain in 1881. He chose the very remote North East coast of Islay for the site, which meant not only did he have to build the road and housing for the workers but also that the only way to get the supplies in and whisky out was by ship. Even though the new road was built in 1960, making it easier to reach the distillery, boats supplied the distillery up to 1993. Bunnahabhain Distillery is known for its low-peated, but they still create a heavily peated style called Staoisha.
