Bunnahabhain 18 Years Old Obscurities & Curiosities

ABV: 59.6% 70 cL

Distilled in 2008 at Bunnahabhain on the north-east coast of Islay, this 18 Years Old single malt spent its life in a single first-fill Oloroso sherry butt before being bottled in 2026 at 59.6% ABV. Unpeated, coastal Bunnahabhain and long-aged Oloroso are a classic pairing, and this one delivers considerable muscle with surprisingly gentle hands.

Bottled at natural cask strength by North Star Spirits for their Obscurities & Curiosities series.

Nose

A creaking circus wagon after midnight: sherry-soaked figs, roasted chestnuts and toasted coconut, with a faint sea breeze creeping beneath the canvas. Crushed coriander seed adds an unexpected twist.

Palate

The strongman has a sweet tooth. Date pudding, salted butter fudge and pecan pie arrive with a wonderfully mouth-coating weight, before a tang of tamarind cuts neatly through the richness.

Finish

Brooding and deliciously persistent. Malted biscuit and black tea draw out a satisfyingly savoury conclusion, with a clean mineral edge beneath the last of the sweetness.

William Robertson built Bunnahabhain in 1881. He chose the very remote North East coast of Islay for the site, which meant not only did he have to build the road and housing for the workers but also that the only way to get the supplies in and whisky out was by ship. Even though the new road was built in 1960, making it easier to reach the distillery, boats supplied the distillery up to 1993. Bunnahabhain Distillery is known for its low-peated, but they still create a heavily peated style called Staoisha.
