Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old Madeira Cask Pride of Islay

ABV: 46.1% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled at Bunnahabhain Distillery, near Port Askaig on the north-east coast of Islay. Unlike many of its Islay neighbours, Bunnahabhain is best known for unpeated spirit – rich, nutty and fruity, with a gentle coastal, mineral edge.

It is released by Thompson Bros. under their "Pride of Islay" label, after 12 years of maturation in Madeira wood. The Dornoch-based independent bottler paired it with label art by Whiskyhobo.

Madeira is a fortified wine from the Portuguese island of the same name, out in the Atlantic. It is aged warm, either in heated rooms or in the island's sunny lofts, which gives the wine its rich, tangy and nutty character. Casks that have held Madeira bring a rich, fruity sweetness to whisky.

Thompson Bros. describe the result as rich and oily, with a mouth-coating texture and plenty of rich cask character, while the distillery's coastal minerality and unpeated Islay character shine through right to the end.

Aged 12 years and presented at natural cask strength of 46.1% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration.

Nose

Rich and oily with bags of coastal minerality still shining through. Ripe red berries and zesty citrus oils lead, followed by a gentle warming hit of toasted cinnamon and lingering baking spice. A quiet touch of soft peanut brittle sits underneath.

Palate

That distinctive coastal mineral spirit carries right through, carried by a rich, mouth-coating texture. Spicy cinnamon and fresh orange peel hit upfront, before honey, walnut oil, and soft, ripe red fruits lift the mid-palate.

Finish

Rich cask character stretches the finish nicely. Honeyed sweetness and toasted baking spice warmth gently give way to more walnut oil, all while keeping that unmistakable, unpeated Islay coastal character right to the end.

William Robertson built Bunnahabhain in 1881. He chose the very remote North East coast of Islay for the site, which meant not only did he have to build the road and housing for the workers but also that the only way to get the supplies in and whisky out was by ship. Even though the new road was built in 1960, making it easier to reach the distillery, boats supplied the distillery up to 1993. Bunnahabhain Distillery is known for its low-peated, but they still create a heavily peated style called Staoisha.
