Bruichladdich 14 Years Old

ABV: 51.3% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled in July 2012 at the Bruichladdich Distillery, which sits on the shores of Loch Indaal on the Rhinns of Islay, in Scotland’s famous Islay whisky region. While Islay is best known for heavily peated drams, Bruichladdich’s signature spirit is elegant, fruity and floral, with a real sense of place.

This bottling comes from independent bottler The Whisky Cellar as part of their Private Cellars Selection, a range of carefully chosen single casks. After 14 years of maturation, the whisky was given a finishing period in a single Madeira wine cask, which gives this release a character all of its own.

Madeira is a fortified wine from the Portuguese island of the same name, out in the Atlantic. It is famously aged in warm conditions, which slowly caramelises and concentrates the wine. This gives it a rich, nutty sweetness balanced by lively acidity, and Madeira casks are prized for adding depth and richness to a whisky.

The Madeira finish brings warmth and richness that complements Bruichladdich’s naturally fruity spirit. The result is a beautifully layered dram with plenty of character.

Bottled at natural cask strength, without chill-filtration or artificial colouring.

The Bruichladdich name comes from the Scottish Gaelic 'Bruthach a' Chladaich', which means brae by the shore. The distillery was founded in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers. The distillery changed hands many times until 1994 when it was shut down as 'surplus to requirements’. It remained mothballed until December 2000, when it was purchased by private investors. It took nearly six months to resume the distillation, as Bruichladdich had never seen any modernisation efforts from the previous owners. In 2012, it was taken over by Remy Cointreau. Today, Bruichladdich produces three different styles of whisky: their classic unpeated under the name Bruichladdich, heavily seated port Charlotte and the world’s most peaty malt - Octomore.
