Murray McDavid

Benriach 9 Years Old Tokaji Wine Benchmark

ABV: 53.2% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled in 2014 at the Benriach Distillery near Elgin, in the heart of Scotland's Speyside region. Founded in 1898 by John Duff on the old Riach farm, Benriach has seen periods of closure and revival throughout its history, emerging as one of Speyside's most inventive distilleries. It is celebrated for its gentle fruitiness and layers of honeyed, orchard-fruit character, its use of mineral-rich aquifer water and traditional floor maltings, and an enduring willingness to experiment with a wide variety of casks.

For this Benchmark release, Murray McDavid matured the spirit in bourbon hogsheads before transferring it to first-fill barriques that had previously held Tokaji, the celebrated sweet wine from Hungary's Tokaj region, for its final three years. Famed for centuries as "the wine of kings and king of wines", Tokaji's rich, honeyed sweetness is a natural partner for Benriach's fruit-forward spirit, adding a lush mouthfeel and further layers of depth.

Aged for 9 years and bottled in Spring 2024 from casks 2100064, 2100065, 2100067 and 2100068, it is presented at natural cask strength of 53.2% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration. Limited to 1,338 bottles.
