Murray McDavid

Aultmore 15 Years Old PX/Oloroso Sherry & Amarone Benchmark

ABV: 51.4% 70 cL

This single malt was distilled in 2008 at the Aultmore Distillery near Keith, in the Speyside region of Scotland. Founded in 1895 by Alexander Edward, Aultmore draws its soft, clean water from the Auchinderran Burn amid the misty landscape of the Foggie Moss. For much of its history the distillery's spirit was destined for Dewar's blends, but it is increasingly celebrated as a single malt in its own right, prized for its fresh, elegant and fruit-driven character.

For this Benchmark release, Murray McDavid has given Aultmore's delicate spirit a richer, more indulgent twist. After initial maturation in bourbon hogsheads, the whisky was finished in a combination of first-fill Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks alongside Amarone wine casks. The sweet, dark fruit of the sherry and the depth of the Italian red wine casks build on the distillery's bright, orchard-fruit style, creating a playful balance between lively spirit and rich, spiced oak.

Aged for 15 years and bottled in Spring 2024 from casks 900315, 2010298, 2020298 and 2020302, it is presented at natural cask strength of 51.4% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration. Limited to 1,127 bottles.

Aultmore Distillery, founded in 1895 by Alexander Edward near Keith in Banffshire, is a Speyside malt producer renowned for the distinctive purity and finesse of its spirit. Drawing soft, clean water from the Auchinderran Burn and surrounded by the misty landscape of Foggie Moss, Aultmore crafts whiskies known for their fresh, almost ethereal character — light yet complex, with notes of meadow grass, sweet herbs, apple, pear, and gentle citrus. Its spirit is silky and elegant, often described as “morning dew in a glass,” with a soft sweetness and delicate balance rather than oak-heavy richness. The finish is smooth and slightly spicy, leaving a crisp, refined impression. Long used in Dewar’s blends but increasingly celebrated in its own right, Aultmore remains one of Speyside’s most understated distilleries, prized by whisky enthusiasts for its natural, unadorned style.
